Islam Makhachev Captures Welterweight Title at UFC 322
BREAKING: Islam Makhachev has made history by becoming the new welterweight champion after a dominant performance against Jack Della Maddalena on October 14, 2023, during UFC 322 at Madison Square Garden in New York. Makhachev secured a unanimous decision victory, marking his 16th consecutive win and tying him with Anderson Silva for the longest winning streak in UFC history.
Makhachev (28-1) showcased his grappling prowess, controlling the fight for an impressive 19 minutes and 10 seconds while outstriking Della Maddalena 123 to 32. “This is the dream,” Makhachev stated. “All my life I’ve fought for this. I worked hard for this moment,” highlighting the emotional weight of his achievement.
Jack Della Maddalena (18-3) faced his toughest challenge yet, unable to counter Makhachev’s relentless strategy. The Australian fighter, who had not lost since his early career setbacks, found himself pinned down throughout the fight. Despite his best efforts, Della Maddalena simply could not contend with Makhachev’s skill set, which included a punishing barrage of calf kicks that severely limited his mobility.
“My life has changed,” Makhachev said, reflecting on his transition to welterweight. “I didn’t have to cut weight. I can do what I want. It made this night easy.”
The bout was not just a showcase of Makhachev’s talent; it was a statement. He executed every takedown attempt flawlessly, leaving Della Maddalena with few opportunities to mount any significant offense. By the third round, it was evident that Makhachev had established complete control, and although Della Maddalena fought valiantly to avoid a finish, he was resigned to defeat.
“This was my plan, and it’s not a secret,” Makhachev added post-fight. “All of my opponents know this, but nobody can stop it.” With this victory, Makhachev has solidified his status as one of the greatest lightweights in UFC history and is now set to embark on a new chapter in the highly competitive welterweight division.
Looking ahead, Makhachev has made his ambitions clear. He boldly declared, “Open the White House,” in reference to a major UFC event set for 2026. Fans can expect to see him face off against a new wave of dynamic fighters as he aims to extend his winning streak further.
This victory not only cements Makhachev’s legacy, but it also raises the stakes in the welterweight division, where exciting matchups await. As the MMA community buzzes with anticipation, all eyes will be on Makhachev as he sets his sights on future challenges.
