Mariners Strike First in Offseason, Re-sign Naylor to 5-Year Deal
UPDATE: The Seattle Mariners have made a significant move in the 2025-26 MLB offseason by re-signing first baseman Josh Naylor to a five-year contract, marking the first major transaction of the winter. This deal, pending a physical, underscores the Mariners’ commitment to building a competitive roster as they aim for a World Series title.
This announcement comes just days after the Mariners’ heartbreaking exit in Game 7 of the ALCS, signaling a clear priority for the front office. Naylor’s return has been highly anticipated, and his performance in the latter part of the 2025 season played a crucial role in this decision. He joined the Mariners mid-season from Arizona and delivered an impressive .299 batting average, nine home runs, and 33 RBIs over 54 games, leading to a strong 2.2 WAR.
The Mariners have long struggled to find a reliable first baseman, with only the Pittsburgh Pirates producing a lower OPS at the position since 2005. Naylor’s consistent hitting and ability to make contact come as a much-needed relief for a Mariners lineup that has been notorious for high strikeout rates. Over the 2025 season, he finished with one of the best strikeout rates among qualified hitters, putting him in the 17th percentile.
Naylor’s success at T-Mobile Park is notable; in just 43 career games at the stadium, he boasts a .304 batting average with a slugging percentage of .534. His ability to hit in a pitcher-friendly environment makes him a valuable asset for the Mariners as they prepare for the upcoming season.
While Naylor may not be a superstar—he achieved a career-high 3.1 WAR in 2025—he represents a dependable choice for Seattle. The contract extends through his age 33 season, presenting some risk toward the end, but the Mariners believe this is a necessary investment to enhance their World Series aspirations.
Fans and analysts alike are excited about this move, as it reflects a proactive approach from the Mariners’ front office. With Naylor back in the fold, Seattle hopes to build momentum heading into the new season.
