UPDATE: New York State is on high alert as Governor Kathy Hochul warns of an impending winter storm that could bring hazardous conditions across large parts of the region. In an urgent announcement made on Sunday, Hochul highlighted the dangers posed by forecasted lake-effect snow, ice, and high winds expected to hit starting Monday, January 15, 2024 and continuing through Wednesday, January 17, 2024.

“This winter storm is approaching several regions, including the North Country, Finger Lakes, and Western New York, bringing conditions that will make roadways hazardous,” Hochul stated during her interview with Spectrum News 1.

Winter Weather Advisories are now in effect for the North Country, Mohawk Valley, Central New York, Southern Tier, and the Mid-Hudson and Capital Regions through Monday afternoon. Authorities are advising residents to monitor local forecasts closely and avoid travel in affected areas where near-whiteout conditions are anticipated on Monday and Tuesday.

In addition to snow, officials are also warning of strong winds that could gust up to 60 to 70 mph, particularly impacting Western New York, the Finger Lakes, and the North Country. A Flood Watch has been issued for these regions, indicating the potential for significant flooding alongside the winter storm impacts.

Emergency management teams, plow crews, and utility personnel have been deployed and are prepared to respond effectively to ensure the safety of New Yorkers throughout this turbulent weather period.

As this severe weather approaches, residents are encouraged to stay indoors and follow safety protocols. Hochul’s office emphasizes the critical need for preparedness as New Yorkers face another wave of challenging winter conditions.
