Nuro Launches Robotaxis with Uber in San Francisco for 2024

URGENT UPDATE: Nuro has just announced a groundbreaking partnership with Uber to deploy robotaxis in San Francisco starting in 2024. This development could significantly change the landscape of autonomous ride-hailing, as Nuro’s co-CEO, Dave Ferguson, leverages his experience from the early days of Google’s self-driving car project.
Nuro is set to introduce a fleet of robotaxis utilizing Lucid’s Gravity SUV, a vehicle priced at nearly $80,000. This collaboration aims to scale up the robotaxi market, tapping into Uber’s vast platform, which boasts nearly 9 million drivers and couriers. Ferguson emphasizes that the combination of Nuro’s cost-effective technology and Uber’s established network creates an “incredible economy of scale.”
Ferguson, who was part of the original Google self-driving car team, stated in an interview with Business Insider that the partnership allows for a competitive price point, making robotaxis more accessible to consumers. “There’s an incredible economy of scale there,” he noted, highlighting the potential for lower costs and enhanced user experience.
With 20,000 robotaxis planned for deployment, Nuro aims to redefine urban mobility in a city where competitors like Waymo have already established a presence. Ferguson believes that the Gravity will appeal to premium services like Uber Black, and he hinted at potential expansions to other platforms in the future, aiming to capture a broader market share.
Ferguson remarked on the importance of having an experienced team at Nuro, stating, “A-players attract A-players.” This foundational philosophy has driven the company’s success, even as it prepares to face competition from Waymo, a company with which Ferguson has a friendly relationship.
The robotaxi initiative is not just a technological advance; it also promises significant human impact. By providing a reliable and affordable alternative to traditional ride-hailing, Nuro and Uber aim to enhance urban commuting, making it safer and more efficient for everyday users.
As Nuro prepares for this major rollout, the company is also focused on overcoming challenges related to scaling fleet operations, including manufacturing and maintenance logistics. “We hope to address both of them through our partnership with Uber and Lucid,” Ferguson explained, noting that Lucid will manufacture the vehicles while Uber develops the necessary infrastructure.
This launch is poised to ignite discussions on the future of transportation, particularly in urban centers where demand for innovative mobility solutions is surging. As the technology advances and public acceptance grows, the landscape of ride-hailing could evolve dramatically.
Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting partnership and watch for the first robotaxis hitting the streets of San Francisco next year. The future of urban transportation is on the brink of a revolution!
