Arden Walker Aims for Bowl Eligibility as CU Buffs Face Arizona
Arden Walker, a senior defensive end for the CU Buffs, is focused on his team’s goal of securing bowl eligibility as they prepare to face the Arizona Wildcats on October 28, 2023. With a current record of 3-5 and 1-4 in the Big 12, Walker understands that the remaining games will significantly impact both his collegiate career and his future prospects in professional football.
The Buffs are coming off a heavy defeat, losing 53-7 to Utah, a game that has left players like Walker determined to turn their season around. “We’ve got to get to six wins, really,” Walker stated. “That’s the bowl eligibility number, so that’s what I’ve been preaching to a lot of guys in the locker room.”
Focus Shifts to Arizona Matchup
The upcoming match against Arizona (4-3, 1-3) is crucial for the Buffs’ hopes of playing in a bowl game. Walker emphasized the importance of this weekend’s game at Folsom Field, scheduled for 5 p.m. local time. He believes that a win is vital not only for the team’s morale but also for their chance at postseason play. “For us to play in December, we’ve got to continue to make sure we can get wins,” he added.
Before the loss against Utah, the Buffs displayed resilience by defeating then-No. 22 Iowa State 24-17 on October 11, 2023. The team has experienced narrow losses against top-10 opponents, including No. 7 Georgia Tech and No. 10 BYU, suggesting that they have the potential to rebound and compete effectively in the coming weeks.
Despite his current focus on team success, Walker is also eyeing the 2026 NFL Draft. “In terms of me, like the trajectory of where I’m trying to go, I have a few games left,” he explained. “I want to make the most of my situation.” With his eyes set on a professional career, he recognizes the importance of improving his draft stock through strong performances.
Walker’s Performance and Leadership
As one of CU’s leading edge defenders, Walker has tallied 32 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, and 1.5 sacks through seven games this season. His performance has been somewhat affected by an injury that caused him to miss the game against Iowa State. Nonetheless, he remains optimistic about his contributions. “The production side, I got to continue just to keep stepping up,” he noted, reflecting on his previous season where he achieved 6.5 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks.
Walker has played a significant role in the team’s defensive strategies, and his leadership is critical as the Buffs aim to overcome recent setbacks. He stated, “We’ve got to respond. We didn’t do what we were supposed to, clearly by the score and how we played.” His call for resilience is echoed by head coach Deion Sanders, who has consistently emphasized that more wins lead to greater exposure and opportunities for his players.
Having missed out on a bowl appearance only once in his college career, Walker is determined to secure one last postseason opportunity before he graduates. “If I do my part and make sure that we get the wins that we need to, I think the exposure and by making the plays that come to me, I feel like it’s completely where I need to be,” he concluded.
With pivotal games ahead, Walker’s dedication to the CU Buffs and his personal aspirations are set to collide in what promises to be an exciting conclusion to his college football career.
