Reds Claim World Series Champion Rortvedt Off Waivers Today
UPDATE: In a stunning move, the Cincinnati Reds have claimed backup catcher Ben Rortvedt off waivers today, just days after he celebrated a World Series championship with the Los Angeles Dodgers. This development signifies a significant shift for the Reds and adds depth to their roster as they prepare for the upcoming season.
Rortvedt, a left-handed hitter, posted a batting average of .152 with one home run and 10 RBIs in 44 games this season, split between the Tampa Bay Rays and Dodgers. Despite his struggles at the plate, he was highly regarded by the Dodgers for his exceptional pitch framing and game-calling skills, particularly while stepping in for injured starter Will Smith.
The 28-year-old catcher joined the Dodgers during a complex three-team deal on July 31. He made notable contributions in the postseason, appearing in the National League Wild Card Series against the Reds and participating in two games of the NL Division Series against Philadelphia, showcasing his potential on the big stage.
In a related development, former All-Star pitcher Tony Gonsolin has opted for free agency after rejecting an outright assignment to the minors following his designation for assignment by the Dodgers last week. The 31-year-old right-hander had a challenging season, making only seven starts before undergoing elbow surgery that concluded his season. He also missed all of 2024 while recovering from Tommy John surgery.
The Reds’ acquisition of Rortvedt underscores their commitment to enhancing their roster in the wake of the offseason. Fans will be watching closely to see how he integrates into the team and whether he can improve his performance in Cincinnati.
As these transactions unfold, the impact on both teams and their upcoming seasons remains to be seen. Stay tuned for more updates on Rortvedt and Gonsolin as the offseason progresses.
