Rivian Unveils Major Updates for 2026 R2 SUV; Production Set Soon
URGENT UPDATE: Rivian has announced significant advancements for its upcoming 2026 R2 midsize SUV, with production on track to commence in the first half of 2026. New details revealed in the company’s third-quarter letter to shareholders highlight groundbreaking features that are set to enhance the driving experience and energy efficiency for customers.
The latest updates include a state-of-the-art energy management control module (EMCM) that consolidates multiple technologies into a single unit, located at the rear of the vehicle’s battery pack. This innovative module will feature a bidirectional on-board vehicle-to-home (V2H) charger, allowing users to pull power from the SUV to their homes, transforming DC power into usable AC power. This capability positions the R2 as a compelling option for those seeking a cost-effective power storage solution in an electric vehicle priced under $50,000.
In addition to the EMCM, Rivian is introducing larger, round battery cells known as the 4695 cell, which reportedly provide six times the energy capacity of the currently used 2170 cells in the R1 models. While the exact kWh capacity of the R2’s battery is still under wraps, Rivian anticipates an impressive range of 330 miles per charge. Production of these new battery cells is expected to commence in the U.S. by 2027, spearheaded by LG Energy Solution, which could mitigate tariff issues and keep costs manageable.
Rivian also confirmed that its factory in Normal, Illinois, has successfully completed crucial infrastructure for the R2, including a 1.1 million square foot assembly facility. The facility will support an annual production capacity of up to 155,000 units, with the first validation builds scheduled to begin by the end of 2025. If timelines hold, pre-production units should roll off the assembly line at the start of 2026.
These developments come as Rivian continues to establish itself in the competitive EV market, attracting attention with its forward-thinking technology and ambitious production goals. The launch of the R2 is particularly significant as it aims to provide an accessible EV option to a broader consumer base.
As anticipation builds, stakeholders and potential buyers are eager to see how these innovations will reshape the electric vehicle landscape. Stay tuned for more updates as Rivian progresses toward the R2’s launch.
