Turf Paradise Launches Major Renovations Under New GM Tom Ludt
UPDATE: Turf Paradise, the Valley’s oldest major sports venue, is undergoing a massive transformation under new management. Just announced, Tom Ludt, a seasoned racing veteran, has taken the helm as general manager, promising to elevate the historic racetrack to new heights.
Located near 15th Avenue and Bell Road in Phoenix, Arizona, Turf Paradise has been a staple of thoroughbred racing since its opening in 1956. Now, with significant renovations underway, the venue aims to reclaim its status as a premier destination for horse racing enthusiasts. Ludt, who previously managed Santa Anita and served as head of the Breeders’ Cup, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “It’s a wonderful city. It’s the perfect time of year…they’ve just never really pushed horse racing.”
The renovation project includes a substantial investment in the track surface, which Ludt noted is critical for safety and performance. “This all starts with the horse. (The horse) is our star. And so you spend an enormous amount of money on this dirt and then maintaining this turf course,” he explained. The initial phase of renovations is focused on enhancing the track’s infrastructure, ensuring a safe and competitive environment for the horses.
In addition to the upgrades to the track, new general admission and grandstand areas are also part of the revitalization efforts. Adding to the excitement, legendary track announcer Vic Stouffer has joined the team, lured out of retirement by the vision of the new operators. Stouffer, known for his iconic race calls at Hollywood Park, expressed his enthusiasm: “These are major players in the racing industry, and I realized that I wanted to be a part of that.”
As construction progresses, Ludt remains optimistic but realistic, acknowledging that only time will tell if these investments will pay off. “We have to create an environment that’s appealing to the novice and the big player,” he said. “We want people to come back to the track.”
Turf Paradise now offers live racing Monday through Thursday, with additional events on select Fridays and Saturdays. For the latest schedule and updates, visit their official website.
This transformation at Turf Paradise is not just about the renovations; it’s about rekindling the excitement of horse racing for a new generation of fans. As the renovations continue, the community watches closely, hopeful that this beloved venue will soon shine once again. Stay tuned for further updates as this story develops.
