UPDATE: A woman was violently knocked down by a massive wave at Pacifica Municipal Pier on Thursday, October 26, 2023, as the Bay Area faces king tides and towering waves between 14 to 25 feet. Video footage from a KRON4 viewer captures the shocking moment, highlighting the dangers present along the coastline.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued urgent warnings, advising the public to avoid jetties, piers, and any waterside infrastructure from Thursday until Saturday morning due to hazardous beach conditions. The risk of sneaker waves has significantly increased, with the NWS describing them as “potentially deadly waves” that can unexpectedly surge far up the beach, endangering those who are unaware.

While it remains unclear whether the wave that struck the woman was a sneaker wave, the NWS emphasizes that these waves can occur at any time. Authorities strongly advise individuals to never turn their back on the ocean under these conditions.

“The volume of sand, water, and gravel they carry can render individuals unable to escape,” warns the NWS. Survivors have recounted that the heavy mixture can feel like concrete, making it nearly impossible to flee from the receding waves that can pull individuals into the ocean.

The NWS has also cautioned beachgoers to stay clear of large logs and debris near the surf line. Sneaker waves can lift or roll these heavy, water-soaked logs, posing serious injury risks. Reports of injuries and fatalities due to such incidents have been documented.

As the conditions worsen, authorities urge everyone to remain vigilant and prioritize safety. With the high tides and waves expected to continue, beachgoers must heed warnings and stay at a safe distance from the water’s edge.
