Dallas Priest Secures Pope’s Blessing for New Church Project
UPDATE: In a remarkable moment, Father Paolo Capra received a blessing from Pope Leo XIV for his parish’s future church during the pontiff’s visit to Istanbul on November 3, 2023. The priest, representing a congregation deeply rooted in the heart of Pleasant Grove, Dallas, is looking to build a new sanctuary that can accommodate its growing community.
Father Capra stood outside the historic cathedral in Istanbul, clutching a brick inscribed with the words “First stone,” his church’s name, and the year 2026—the target year for the new church’s completion. “This stone would like to be the first stone of the new church we want to build in the parish of St. Augustine,” he told CNN’s Vatican correspondent, Christopher Lamb.
The current St. Augustine Church, located on St. Augustine Road, struggles to serve its congregation of approximately 500 members, many of whom are low-income and immigrants from Mexico. The church aims to raise $17 million for the first phase of construction, as detailed on its official website. Plans include a modern sanctuary with a striking white façade, a green roof, and a prominent cross-topped tower.
As Pope Leo XIV approached, the anticipation was palpable. Capra expressed hope that the pontiff would bless the brick, which symbolizes the dreams of his congregation. To the joyous cheers of the crowd, the Pope clasped hands with Capra and his group, acknowledging their presence from Dallas. In a heartwarming gesture, he waved a cross over the brick, offering the blessing Capra had sought.
“¡Viva el Papa! ¡Viva el Papa!” the gathered supporters shouted, celebrating this significant connection between their community and the Vatican.
This blessing marks a profound moment for the parish, setting the stage for a future that hopes to encompass a larger, more beautiful place of worship. As the church embarks on this ambitious project, the support from the Pope adds a layer of spiritual significance that resonates deeply with the congregation.
Next steps include launching fundraising efforts to meet the $17 million goal, with the community rallying together to turn this vision into reality. The emotional weight of this moment underscores the importance of faith and community, particularly for those who have come together despite challenges.
The church’s journey is now not only a local story but a global one, intertwining the lives of its members with the broader narrative of faith and hope as they look toward a bright future. Stay tuned for further updates on this inspiring development.
