UPDATE: New York Governor Kathy Hochul has just extended a state of emergency across the entire state due to a severe winter storm unleashing hazardous conditions. Originally declared last Friday, this emergency now encompasses all counties as lake-effect snow and wind gusts of up to 70 mph continue to batter the region.

Travel conditions are deteriorating rapidly, with forecasts predicting near whiteout conditions, particularly in the Syracuse metro area, through Tuesday. Residents in affected areas are urged to stay indoors and avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.

Non-essential state employees in counties including Erie, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Niagara, and others have been directed to telecommute on Tuesday, where feasible. Hochul emphasized the importance of staying informed, stating, “Monitor local forecasts, avoid travel, and stay prepared.”

As the storm progresses, snowfall rates are expected to escalate, with 2 to 3 feet of snow anticipated across Chautauqua Ridge and southern Erie County by Wednesday night. Buffalo and areas to the north could also see more than a foot of accumulation, with rates potentially exceeding 1.5 inches per hour in some locations.

The storm’s impact is already being felt, with over 7,500 utility workers deployed for damage assessment and restoration efforts statewide. Multiple road closures are in effect, including restrictions on empty tractor trailers on major highways.

Residents are reminded that lake-effect snow from Lake Ontario is expected to shift southward, affecting the Syracuse area overnight. Officials warn that the Tug Hill Plateau may receive similar snow totals, with forecasts suggesting local rates could spike to 3 inches per hour at times.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. Plow crews and emergency management teams are actively working to ensure public safety amid these extreme conditions. The governor’s office stands ready to deploy additional resources as needed.

Stay tuned for further updates as this developing story unfolds.
