UPDATE: Depew Police have filed a Temporary Extreme Risk Protection Order against a student following a disturbing social media threat that has raised serious safety concerns in the community. The incident came to light on July 15, 2025, when Depew schools alerted families about the troubling post made by a student associated with the district.

Authorities confirm that while the threat is not deemed credible, it is being taken very seriously. Superintendent Katie Smith stated, “Any type of threat, even one that does not specifically name the district or its schools, is taken seriously.” The police’s swift action underscores the district’s commitment to ensuring a safe environment for all students.

The social media post surfaced shortly after a violent altercation at Depew High School, which was captured on video and circulated online. The application for the protection order reveals that the student was involved in a “targeted assault of a juvenile student victim” during this incident. The court document highlighted a profane video posted by the student, threatening violence against those who commented on the video and the individual who posted it.

The emotional toll is evident. Parent Rachel Bohn expressed her concern for her daughter, who was assaulted during the altercation. “It’s tough,” Bohn said. “She’s looking over her shoulder constantly now because an assault like that, that doesn’t just walk away from your brain, that stays.” Bohn emphasized the lasting impact of the violence on her daughter, who struggles to feel safe.

An Extreme Risk Protection Order is a legal measure designed to prevent individuals deemed dangerous to themselves or others from possessing firearms. This order mandates that the student must surrender any firearms they own and prohibits them from purchasing new ones.

District officials are coordinating closely with the Depew Police Department regarding the situation. Superintendent Smith noted, “The District was advised by the Depew Police Department that they have taken action. The District is addressing this matter in accordance with District policy and New York State Education Law 3214.”

As the situation develops, the Depew community remains on alert. Parents are advised to stay informed and report any further concerns to local authorities. The district’s priority is to maintain a secure and supportive atmosphere for every student.

More updates are expected as authorities continue to investigate the incident and its implications for school safety. Stay tuned for the latest developments on this urgent matter.
