Netflix Partners with Yash Raj Films to Stream Bollywood Classics
Netflix has announced a significant partnership with Yash Raj Films (YRF) that will bring a selection of iconic Bollywood films to its streaming platform. This collaboration aims to make YRF’s extensive catalog available to audiences worldwide, starting from November 1, 2023. The release schedule will coincide with various festivals and cinematic milestones, enhancing the viewing experience for fans of Hindi cinema.
The rollout will begin with nine films starring Shah Rukh Khan, including classics such as “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge,” “Mohabbatein,” and “Chak De India.” This initial offering is timed to coincide with Khan’s birthday, a strategic move to attract his substantial fanbase. Following this, additional titles featuring renowned actors like Amitabh Bachchan, Sridevi, and Anil Kapoor will be available starting November 14.
As the holiday season approaches, Netflix plans to release 34 films during a daily schedule from December 12 to 28. This lineup includes popular titles such as “Bunty Aur Babli” and “Hum Tum,” with two films premiering each day. To celebrate Salman Khan’s birthday, three of his blockbuster films, “Ek Tha Tiger,” “Sultan,” and “Tiger Zinda Hai,” will be available for streaming on December 27.
The partnership extends beyond 2023, with a special collection launching on February 7, 2026, for Valentine’s week. This collection will feature eight romantic films, including “Saathiya” and “Ishaqzaade.” Additionally, major franchises such as the “Dhoom” trilogy, which stars Aamir Khan, will become available from November 28, and the “Mardaani” series, featuring Rani Mukerji, will debut on January 22, 2026.
Monika Shergill, Vice President of India Content at Netflix, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “This collaboration brings together YRF’s rich heritage and Netflix’s unparalleled reach to celebrate Indian cinema in all its glory.” She emphasized the importance of these films in showcasing the depth and diversity of Indian storytelling, allowing both nostalgic viewers and new audiences to enjoy classic cinema.
Yash Raj Films has been a cornerstone of Indian cinema for over 50 years, known for its impactful storytelling and beloved characters. Akshaye Widhani, CEO of YRF, remarked on the significance of this collaboration: “Our library is more than a collection of iconic films; it’s a gateway to five decades of culture, creativity, and passion.” He noted that bringing YRF’s cinematic legacy to Netflix will allow global audiences to experience the vibrancy of Indian cinema.
This partnership marks a milestone not only for YRF but also for Netflix, as it continues to expand its offerings of international content. The integration of these timeless films into Netflix’s platform highlights the growing interest in Bollywood and Indian cinema worldwide, reinforcing the platform’s commitment to delivering diverse and culturally rich content to its subscribers.
