Trump Signals Pessimism on GOP Elections, Insiders Report
UPDATE: Insiders close to President Donald Trump report that he may be distancing himself from the upcoming elections, signaling a lack of confidence in the Republican Party’s chances. The Washington Post revealed today that Trump has not invested the usual millions into key races in states like Virginia and New Jersey, raising concerns about his support for GOP candidates.
Sources indicate that Trump’s silence in Virginia is particularly telling. Former GOP state delegate Chris Saxman commented, “I don’t think he likes to back candidates he knows are going to lose.” This reluctance to engage represents a stark contrast to his past election strategies and suggests a growing pessimism within his camp.
Currently, Trump has only formally endorsed Attorney General Jason Miyares while notably avoiding an endorsement for gubernatorial nominee Winsome Earle-Sears. When asked about Earle-Sears, Trump offered a lukewarm endorsement, stating, “The Republican candidate is very good” but quickly pivoting to criticize the Democratic opponent.
Republican strategists are divided on Trump’s involvement in these races. One operative involved in the New Jersey governor’s race noted that, “If Trump showed up in the state on Sunday or Monday, Jack’s turnout Tuesday would be insane,” referring to Republican candidate Jack Ciattarelli facing off against incumbent Democratic Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill.
However, caution is advised, as Marc Short, former chief of staff to Trump’s first vice president, remarked that the political terrain this year heavily favors Democrats. “Pretty much the whole terrain this year is in Democrat states or cities,” he stated, suggesting that Trump’s presence might not yield the expected results.
Longtime Trump pollster John McLaughlin pointed out that many Trump supporters are feeling complacent, which could hinder turnout efforts. “There’s a lot more incentive to come out because you’re upset about having lost the previous year,” he noted.
Democrats are capitalizing on Trump’s hesitance, as campaign messaging increasingly targets his policies. In Virginia, nearly half of the Democratic gubernatorial ads and a striking 69 percent of ads in the attorney general race have mentioned Trump directly. One ad highlights, “Sears backs Trump policies that are raising prices for everything.”
In a preemptive move, Trump has also begun to question the integrity of the electoral process in California, asserting on social media, “Watch how totally dishonest the California Prop Vote is!” This echoes his longstanding claims of electoral fraud.
The overarching narrative paints a picture of a president carefully managing his political capital, choosing to keep a strategic distance from potentially losing candidates while attempting to retain influence. As the elections draw closer, the stakes are undeniably high, and the GOP’s performance could have lasting implications for Trump’s political future.
