Couple Transforms Dream of Vacation Home into Off-Grid Reality
UPDATE: A couple’s dream of owning a vacation home in the Pacific Northwest has taken a unique turn, as they embrace an off-grid lifestyle after rising housing prices made traditional homeownership unattainable. Sally Marks and her partner Carol have successfully transformed their vision into a reality by purchasing a 4.6-acre property on the Olympic Peninsula in 2022 for $160,000.
Prices in their desired area soared, with many listings exceeding $500,000. Frustrated but determined, the couple purchased a raw piece of land complete with trees and wildflowers, yet devoid of water, sewer, or power connections.
They ordered a 20-foot Airstream Basecamp for $65,000 to serve as their home on the property, which is located about 30 minutes from Port Townsend, WA. Marks and Carol quickly set up a sustainable living system, utilizing portable solar panels, rainwater collection, and a small battery-operated pump for water delivery.
“We wanted to establish a foothold and be a part of the community for several months each year,” Marks said, reflecting on their decision to go off the grid.
The couple has adapted their lifestyle to include energy conservation strategies, charging devices during trips into town and creating an outdoor space for cooking and dining. Carol even set up a tent for outdoor rehearsals as she joined a local band.
Despite the challenges of living off the grid, the couple finds joy in their connection to nature. They prepare their property for winter before returning to their on-grid home in Arizona for the remainder of the year.
“Living off the grid has been an interesting adventure, but we don’t regret our decision,” Marks shared. “The Pacific Northwest is now our home for three to five months a year, just like we dreamed.”
This inspiring story of resilience reflects a growing trend among homeowners seeking affordable alternatives in high-demand areas. With innovative solutions, Marks and Carol have turned their dream into a sustainable lifestyle, demonstrating that it is possible to live in paradise without breaking the bank.
As more people seek to escape rising housing costs, the couple’s experience could pave the way for others to consider similar off-grid options, offering hope and inspiration to those longing for a home in their ideal location.
