Disney Launches First Storyliving Community in California NOW
UPDATE: Disney has officially launched its first Storyliving community, Cotino, in Rancho Mirage, California, marking a significant expansion into residential living. This development, which aims to blend Disney’s iconic storytelling with real-life community living, is already attracting attention from fans and potential residents alike.
The unveiling comes just weeks after Disney invited reporters, including myself, to tour the innovative community that promises a blend of luxury, recreation, and a touch of Disney magic. Cotino will feature 1,932 homes, but currently, only a handful have been completed. In a notable early opening, Disney has revealed the Artisan Club, which boasts a 24-acre lake designed by Crystal Lagoons, a lakefront bar, and the Architects Fork restaurant, catering to the lifestyle of its affluent residents.
Residents at the Artisan Club will also enjoy exclusive amenities such as pickleball courts, designed for those with deep pockets who can afford the substantial annual dues. The visual centerpiece of the club is the stunning Parr House, modeled after the mid-century modern safe house from Disney-Pixar’s “Incredibles 2,” standing proudly over Cotino’s lake.
Disney’s move into residential communities isn’t entirely new. Following the construction of Celebration in the 1990s and Golden Oak a decade later, Cotino represents the company’s third venture into residential living. As with its predecessors, Disney incorporates unique design elements, such as light fixtures made from pages of Disney fairy tales and Imagineers’ sketches decorating the walls of the Artisan Club’s restaurant, creating an immersive experience for residents.
However, concerns arise about accessibility. While communities like Cotino cater to wealthy buyers, many Disney fans wonder if there will ever be an opportunity for a more affordable community inspired by Walt Disney’s original vision for the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow.
As Disney continues to focus on luxury developments, questions linger about the feasibility of creating a “community of tomorrow” that serves the broader public. The economic forces at play often push new real estate projects toward high-end markets, leaving many families priced out.
As we look ahead, the success of Cotino will likely influence Disney’s future real estate strategies. The company has demonstrated a commitment to delivering community amenities early in the development process, which is a welcome change for buyers who have faced delays in other luxury projects.
