GOP Strategist Urges Republicans: “Get Your Act Together!”
UPDATE: GOP strategist Frank Luntz delivered a stark warning to Republican leaders, urging them to “get their act together” in light of strong Democratic voter turnout in the recent elections. Speaking during a live interview on CNN with anchor Brianna Keilar, Luntz emphasized the critical implications of the election results and the pressing need for a unified Republican strategy.
The comments come after Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) claimed that off-year elections do not significantly impact the Republican Party. Luntz countered that assertion, stating, “It does matter. And Democrats voted and Republicans did not.” He highlighted that the current political climate shows a clear motivation among Democratic voters, particularly in states like California, where initiatives like Proposition 50 could potentially add five Republican seats to the House.
“This could very well make the difference in the majority one year from now,” Luntz warned, stressing that the implications of these elections extend far beyond party lines. He pointed out that while Republicans may feel complacent with their previous hold on power, Democrats are galvanized and ready to mobilize.
Voter concerns over affordability—including costs related to health care, housing, and food—are at the forefront of this election cycle. Luntz noted, “…It is very clear… and it’s not inflation, it’s affordability.” He stated that voters are likely to support candidates who prioritize making life more affordable, a message that resonates strongly in key battleground states.
As the political landscape shifts, Luntz also remarked on the moderate Democratic candidates in races across Virginia and New Jersey, such as newly elected Abigail Spanberger and Mikie Sherrill. Their message of affordability mirrors that of more progressive candidates, highlighting a unified front on critical issues.
Former President Donald Trump acknowledged the disappointing cycle for Republicans, attributing part of the blame to internal party dynamics. Luntz reiterated that despite Trump’s absence on the ballot, the election served as a referendum on public sentiment. “To some degree, yes. He wasn’t on the ballot. His people did not find a reason… to vote,” Luntz stated.
Moreover, Luntz expressed frustration over the ongoing government shutdown, pointing out that the American public is fed up with the political gridlock. “The public doesn’t care who’s responsible. Just open up the gosh darn government,” he urged. He emphasized the dire consequences of inaction, particularly for essential services and support systems, which could lead to backlash against both parties.
As the nation approaches the critical election year, Luntz’s remarks underscore an urgent call for Republicans to reevaluate their strategies and address the pressing needs of voters. “Get your act together. Do your job. Come together. Compromise and move everything forward,” he implored.
The stakes are high as both parties prepare for a challenging electoral battle in the coming months. With the potential for significant shifts in voter sentiment, the urgency to adapt and respond to public concerns has never been more critical. As the political landscape evolves, all eyes will be on how these developments unfold ahead of the 2024 elections.
