Caribbean Artists Unite to Promote Blood Donation and Sickle Cell Awareness
A new initiative titled “Music Brings Life” is leveraging the power of music to address critical health issues within Black, Caribbean, and Latino communities. Co-founded by Barbadian cultural advocate Prince Forde and Guyanese-American artist and activist Keenan “Special” Bristol, the nonprofit aims to raise awareness about the urgent need for blood donations and support for sickle cell disease.
On November 4, 2023, Marie Driven, managing partner of Brooklyn-based entertainment company PlaybookMG, provided insights into the project during an interview with Caribbean Life. Driven explained that the initiative merges music, culture, and advocacy to create a significant impact within these communities.
The effort is particularly timely as the Sickle Cell Consortium has partnered with the Boys & Girls Club to launch a film screening tour across three states this fall. The tour will feature the documentary “Students Are Heroes: A Sickle Cell Warrior’s Story,” which showcases the resilience of students and families affected by sickle cell disease. The film emphasizes how community action, especially from the Caribbean Diaspora, can lead to life-saving changes.
Tour Launches in Georgia with Nationwide Expansion Planned
The tour commenced successfully at the Worley Brown Boys & Girls Club in Norcross, Georgia, and will be followed by screenings in New York City and New Jersey. Plans for nationwide expansion are already underway, with a broader launch anticipated for 2026.
Driven highlighted the strong cultural ties that both Forde and Bristol share. Forde, who is also the COO of Music Brings Life, is known for his role as co-founder of Caribbean Elite Magazine and the Caribbean Music Awards. Bristol has made significant contributions to blood donation efforts, having facilitated the collection of over 5,000 units of blood since 2009 through various music-driven campaigns.
The collaboration aims to educate Caribbean and Latino families about the importance of blood donation and raise awareness about sickle cell disease, which disproportionately affects individuals of African and Caribbean descent. Driven noted the partnership symbolizes a powerful cultural moment, merging Caribbean creativity with a commitment to community health.
According to Driven, the mission of Music Brings Life is not only to entertain but also to inspire action and change within communities. By utilizing the universal language of music, Forde and Bristol are determined to make a lasting impact on public health.
