Residents in El Paso are rallying to support families facing food insecurity as the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) remains in a state of uncertainty. Community organizer Nicole Roldan has initiated a gift card donation drive in partnership with local grocery chain Food City, which has already benefited over 250 households and kept more than $10,000 circulating within the local economy.

Roldan’s motivation stemmed from concerns for those who have lost their paychecks and the subsequent impact on food accessibility. “I was heartsick over knowing there were so many people going without pay,” she stated. “But then, realizing that so many more would be losing access to food that they’d be counting on, I knew that the loss of those revenues would really affect grocers and local businesses.”

Community Response to SNAP Challenges

The drive aims to address the financial strain that local grocers, particularly Food City, are experiencing due to the SNAP shutdown. The store relies heavily on customers who use electronic benefits transfer (EBT) cards, with estimates indicating that between 16% and 47% of their receipts come from EBT transactions, depending on the time of year.

Roldan explained how quickly the project took shape: “They already have the infrastructure, they already have a supply chain. And they already had gift cards that could be loaded up from donations. We tooled it quickly and were able to market it within 24 hours.” The swift action reflects a community committed to protecting both families in need and local businesses.

Despite raising over $10,000, the demand for assistance has surged, with more than 1,500 applications for aid submitted within just two days. Roldan expressed hope that similar initiatives could be adopted across Texas, emphasizing that this program is not intended to replace the valuable work of food banks, but rather to serve as a rapid response mechanism to support local businesses and combat food deserts.
