AWS Unveils Fastnet: New High-Speed Cable to Connect US and Ireland
UPDATE: Amazon Web Services (AWS) has just announced plans for a groundbreaking subsea internet cable named Fastnet, set to connect the US and Ireland by 2028. This vital project promises to deliver a staggering 320 Tbps of capacity, equivalent to streaming 12.5 million HD videos simultaneously or transmitting the entire digitized Library of Congress three times every second.
The Fastnet cable will run from Maryland to County Cork, buried approximately 1.5 meters beneath the seabed to safeguard it from potential damage. This strategic depth is a response to escalating geopolitical tensions and previous threats to critical infrastructure. Additionally, the cable will be reinforced with extra armor near shorelines to ensure durability.
AWS aims to enhance its existing predominantly east coast cable networks with this new connection, providing a robust backup that mitigates risks from accidental cuts or deliberate sabotage.
“Ireland will become a true gateway to Europe for submarine telecommunications cables,” stated Taoiseach Micheál Martin, praising the investment. This development not only strengthens connectivity but also positions Ireland as a crucial player in global internet infrastructure.
Using advanced optical switching technology, Fastnet will offer flexibility in routing and the possibility of adding more landing points in the future. This innovative approach is essential for maintaining secure and reliable data flows across continents, especially in an era where internet safety is paramount.
AWS’s announcement comes on the heels of recent disruptions in internet services, including significant outages affecting various platforms, underscoring the necessity for resilient infrastructure. The company also revealed plans for an additional 10 Availability Zones and three new AWS Regions, further expanding its network capabilities.
As this ambitious project unfolds, the tech industry and global users eagerly await the enhanced connectivity and opportunities that Fastnet will bring.
Follow updates on this developing story as AWS continues to shape the future of global internet access and infrastructure.
