Bangor Church Severely Damaged by Fire, Investigation Underway
BREAKING: A devastating fire has severely damaged a nondenominational church in Bangor, prompting immediate condemnation by local officials. The blaze erupted early Wednesday morning at 125 S. Main St. and is currently under investigation, according to Borough Manager Stephen Reider.
As of Thursday, a “condemned” sign has been prominently displayed at the church’s entrance, signaling the extent of the damage. Reider stated, “It is still very fresh. I haven’t been made aware of anything new,” indicating that details about the fire’s cause remain unclear.
Fortunately, there were no injuries reported, and the church was unoccupied at the time of the incident. Initial images circulating on social media captured the intense flames and thick smoke billowing from the structure, visible for miles. Fire crews utilized a tower ladder to combat the flames that had engulfed the roof.
The situation necessitated traffic detours around South Main Street, also known as Route 191, while firefighters battled the blaze for several hours. The response involved dozens of first responders from across Northampton County, illustrating the community’s swift action in the face of disaster.
“We are grateful for the support from Council members Marissa Donnelly and Marc Sperling, who provided assistance, food, and water during the incident,” reported the Liberty Fire Company’s official social media page.
The church, owned by Gethsemane Ministries and leased to Lighthouse Ministries, has historical significance, having been built in the early 1900s. Prior to its current ownership, the property was affiliated with Salem Evangelical Church before being sold in 2000, according to Northampton County property records.
As investigators work to determine the cause of the fire, community members are left grappling with the impact of this loss. Officials are urging anyone with information related to the incident to come forward as the investigation continues.
This developing story will be updated as more information becomes available. Stay tuned for further updates on this urgent situation affecting the Bangor community.
