Devils Lake Seizes First State Football Title in Thrilling 39-34 Victory

UPDATE: In a thrilling showdown that kept fans on the edge of their seats, the Devils Lake Firebirds clinched their first-ever state football title by defeating Minot North 39-34 in the Class AA championship at the Fargodome on October 27, 2023. The victory capped an intense game where Minot North’s late-game comeback efforts ultimately fell short.

With just seconds left on the clock, Devils Lake head coach Todd Lambrecht experienced a rollercoaster of emotions. After the final pass hit the turf, Lambrecht dropped to his knees in relief—only to be met with an unexpected twist as officials added a second back to the clock. One more play loomed, but when the final pass fell incomplete, jubilation erupted from the Devils Lake sidelines.

Paced by an incredible performance from senior running back Bryar Exner, who rushed for 225 yards, and quarterback Mason Palmer, who passed for 217 yards and threw four touchdown passes, the Firebirds showcased resilience and teamwork throughout the game. “This is amazing. I’m proud of our guys—they earned it,” Lambrecht said after the victory.

Devils Lake took a 26-21 lead into the fourth quarter, but Minot North was determined to fight back. The Sentinels appeared to gain momentum with a lengthy 10-play drive until a crucial fumble was recovered by Luke Wasness, allowing Devils Lake to regain control.

Just moments later, Palmer connected with Will Heilman in the end zone, extending the lead to 33-28. Minot North retaliated with a scoring drive of their own, narrowing the gap to 39-34 with less than five minutes left in the game. However, a failed onside kick allowed the Firebirds to maintain possession, and a strategic punt by Palmer effectively sealed the victory.

Game highlights included a frenetic start, with Minot North initially leading 2-0 after a safety. However, Devils Lake quickly turned the tides with an explosive 79-yard touchdown catch by Heilman and an 81-yard TD run by Exner, showcasing their offensive prowess.

Despite their loss, Minot North finished the season with an impressive record of 11-1, marking only their second varsity season. Coach Jacob Holmen reflected on the season, emphasizing his team’s determination: “We didn’t tackle very well today, but our kids never quit and battled hard until the end.”
