The Basilica de la Sagrada Familia in Barcelona has reached a significant milestone in its construction journey. On October 31, 2025, the first part of the cross was installed atop the Tower of Jesus Christ, marking the commencement of the final phase of building the temple’s tallest structure. With this addition, the tower now stands at a height of 162.91 meters.

Historic Progress on the Tower of Jesus Christ

The lower arm of the cross measures 7.25 meters in length and weighs 24 tons. It was carefully positioned at the summit of the tower, following its arrival in July as four separate panels. These panels were assembled on a work platform that sits 54 meters above the main nave, where they underwent glazing, stonework, and interior finishing.

Designed with a distinctive double-twist geometry, the cross transitions from a square base to an octagonal upper section. Its exterior features white glazed ceramic and glass, materials chosen for their luminosity and durability against atmospheric conditions. Once fully assembled, the cross will reach a total height of 17 meters, comparable to a five-story building, and extend 13.5 meters in width.

Symbolism and Future Celebrations

The Tower of Jesus Christ serves as the symbolic and architectural centerpiece of the Sagrada Familia, reflecting the original vision of architect Antoni Gaudí for a spiritual ascent culminating in light. The tower’s inauguration is scheduled for June 2026, coinciding with the centenary of Gaudí’s death. In anticipation of this event, the Sagrada Familia will host a series of special events and public celebrations.

This momentous installation not only represents a significant step forward in the construction of one of the world’s most iconic structures but also serves as a reminder of Gaudí’s enduring legacy.
