UND Freshman David Klee Shines in College Hockey Debut
David Klee made a notable entrance into college hockey during his debut for the University of North Dakota (UND) against Clarkson on March 1, 2024, in Potsdam, New York. The freshman forward recorded an assist on his first shift and played a crucial role in the team’s 1-0 victory the following day, leading the Fighting Hawks in offensive plays. Klee, who was a seventh-round pick of the San Jose Sharks, previously spent three seasons in the United States Hockey League (USHL) before transitioning to collegiate hockey.
Reflecting on his development during his time with the Muskegon Lumberjacks, Klee emphasized the importance of increased playing time and trust from his coaches. “I had a lot more playing time, a lot more trust with the coaches, being my third year of juniors,” he explained. Klee focused on enhancing his puck control and finding open teammates, while also honing his defensive skills and faceoff techniques.
Championship Memories Fuel Ambitions
Klee’s experience winning the Clark Cup championship last season has left a lasting impression. He described it as “a once-in-a-lifetime thing to win a championship like that at a super high level,” expressing a desire to replicate that success at UND. The decisive Game 5, which went into overtime, was particularly memorable. “It was crazy. It’s like Game 7… I just tried to take a breath and enjoy every moment of it,” he said.
In a unique twist, Klee faced his current associate head coach, Matt Smaby, during that championship series. Although they occasionally reference their past encounters, Klee noted that their focus is now on current goals with the Fighting Hawks.
Growing Up in a Hockey Family
Klee’s hockey journey has been influenced by his family’s deep ties to the sport. His father, Ken Klee, played 934 games in the NHL for teams including the Washington Capitals and Toronto Maple Leafs. David’s earliest memories involve being around NHL dressing rooms, particularly when his father played for the Phoenix Coyotes under coach Wayne Gretzky. “It was pretty special,” Klee recalled, highlighting the impact of those formative experiences.
Both of Klee’s older brothers, Garrett and Mason, also pursued hockey at the collegiate and professional levels. Their journeys provided David with insights into the challenges and commitment required in the sport. “It gave me an advantage over a lot of people who may not realize how long of a road it is,” he stated.
When asked about his interests outside hockey, Klee shared his enjoyment of pickleball and his support for the Denver Broncos, a connection rooted in his Colorado upbringing. He also mentioned that his best-dressed teammate is Ben Strinden, who he shares a room with on the road.
Klee’s approach to life and sport is guided by a piece of advice from his father: “Control the controllables.” This mantra helps him focus on what he can manage, particularly his effort and attitude during games and practices.
As he embarks on his collegiate career, Klee reflects on his aspirations, including a potential future beyond hockey. His love for the ocean and outdoor activities leads him to consider roles such as a fishing guide. For now, he is focused on making the most of his time at UND and contributing to the team’s success.
Overall, David Klee’s debut performance and background illustrate a promising start to his college hockey career, with aspirations for future championships driving his ambition.
