Beloved Canine Influencer Tika the Iggy Passes Away at 14
Tika the Iggy, a 14-year-old Italian Greyhound known for her viral fashion presence, has died following complications from surgery. The announcement came on March 25, 2024, via a heartfelt statement shared on the dog’s Instagram account, where she had garnered an impressive 1.6 million followers. Tika also boasted a significant following of 3.1 million on TikTok, captivating audiences with her stylish outfits and charming personality.
Owner Thomas Shapiro expressed his grief in a touching message, stating, “Tika, I really thought you were going to live forever. I thought we had more time, but there are things we cannot control. Our hearts are shattered.” Tika underwent surgery to remove two tumors from her liver. Initially, the procedure seemed successful, but her health took a turn for the worse shortly after returning home.
In his poignant tribute, Shapiro described Tika’s condition on the second day post-surgery, noting, “You looked so tired, not quite yourself, yet peaceful.” The family later learned that her body was “slowly giving up,” a risk often associated with surgery in senior dogs. Tika spent her final moments surrounded by Shapiro and his husband, Louis Shapiro, creating a bittersweet farewell for the beloved pet.
A Fashion Icon and Social Media Sensation
Tika the Iggy was not just a pet; she was a fashion icon and a sensation in the online pet community. Her unique style earned her recognition in fashion circles, with Vogue once referring to her as “a new fashion It girl.” The popular TikTok account The Dogist even dubbed her “The Anna Wintour of Dogs,” highlighting her influence in the realm of pet fashion.
News of Tika’s passing prompted an outpouring of condolences from her vast online following and fellow pet influencers. The account for We Rate Dogs commented, “Our team is devastated over here. Thank you for sharing her with the world ❤️ rest easy Tika.” Similarly, the account for Doug the Pug expressed their sorrow, stating they were “beyond sorry” and “crying tears with [you].”
Shapiro expressed deep gratitude for the joy Tika brought not only to their lives but also to her many followers. “We just hope you know how deeply you were loved, Tika. By us, but also by so many others who came to know you,” he wrote. “You truly loved meeting new friends, and you were larger than life.”
Tika the Iggy’s impact on social media and her ability to connect with people across the globe will be remembered fondly. Her legacy lives on through the countless hearts she touched, proving that even in her absence, her spirit remains vibrant in the community she helped create.
