ADL Chief Calls Incoming NYC Mayor a ‘Clear Danger’ to Jews
Following the election of Zohran Mamdani as the next mayor of New York City, the chief of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) has raised alarms about the implications of his leadership for the Jewish community. In a recent appearance on the “Brian Kilmeade Show,” ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt characterized Mamdani as a “clear and present danger” to Jewish residents, expressing concerns over his past statements and affiliations.
Mamdani, who identifies as a democratic socialist, secured victory against former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa in the mayoral race, which concluded on November 7, 2023. Greenblatt noted that the election result has led to widespread anxiety among the city’s Jewish population. “Hundreds of thousands of Jewish New Yorkers are alarmed, and that anxiety is well-placed,” he stated.
Concerns Over Antisemitic Remarks
The ADL’s concerns largely stem from Mamdani’s refusal to disavow the slogan “globalize the intifada,” a phrase associated with anti-Israel protests that has been interpreted by many as inciting violence against Israel. Greenblatt emphasized that Mamdani’s comments and commitments may create an environment that further endangers Jewish residents in New York City.
During his campaign, Mamdani was also scrutinized for sharing a photo with Imam Siraj Wahhaj, who has previously expressed controversial views and served as a character witness for a key figure in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing. Critics have pointed to these associations as problematic, arguing they contribute to a narrative of antisemitism.
ADL’s Response and Future Monitoring
In light of Mamdani’s election, the ADL has launched several initiatives aimed at monitoring antisemitic incidents and holding the new mayor accountable for his policies. Greenblatt announced the creation of a tip line for New Yorkers to report experiences of antisemitism, promising that the ADL would ensure proper follow-up with authorities.
“We are going to hold this guy accountable,” Greenblatt asserted, unveiling a program called the “Mamdani Monitor,” which will track appointments and policy decisions made by the incoming mayor.
Mamdani has consistently denied allegations of antisemitism, asserting that his critiques are directed at the Israeli government rather than Jewish individuals. He has publicly stated his intention to arrest Benjamin Netanyahu should the Israeli Prime Minister enter New York City, a stance he reaffirmed during a prior interview.
As tensions rise surrounding Mamdani’s election, the ADL continues to advocate for vigilance and accountability, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding the rights and safety of all communities in New York City.
