Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley has formally requested an investigation by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) into the wedding planning website The Knot. Grassley alleges that the company has engaged in fraudulent and deceptive business practices that mislead small businesses advertising on its platform. The senator’s office has reportedly received nearly 200 complaints from wedding vendors who claim that The Knot has failed to uphold advertising contracts, provided misleading leads, and made false promises regarding discounts.

In a letter to FTC Chair Andrew Ferguson, Grassley detailed a troubling account from a small business owner who reached out to The Knot’s customer support to address ongoing issues. The vendor expressed concern that her business was being incorrectly categorized on the site and was not receiving meaningful leads. According to Grassley, the supervisor told the business owner that the lack of legitimate leads was due to the absence of reviews on her profile. The senator quoted the owner as saying that the supervisor suggested she create fake accounts and write her own reviews to enhance her business’s credibility, thus potentially increasing the number of legitimate leads.

Grassley first contacted the FTC regarding these allegations in March 2023. Since that initial communication, he has reported receiving additional complaints from vendors who share similar grievances about The Knot’s practices.

The Knot has responded to these allegations by asserting its dedication to transparency and its commitment to helping wedding professionals expand their businesses. As stated on its website, The Knot connects over 4 million users with more than 900,000 small businesses across North America, Latin America, Europe, and Asia.

The senator’s request for an investigation underscores growing concerns among small business owners regarding the effectiveness and integrity of digital advertising platforms. Grassley’s initiative aims to ensure that these businesses are treated fairly and that their advertising investments yield genuine results.

As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how the FTC will respond to Grassley’s request and what implications this might have for The Knot and similar platforms in the wedding planning industry.
