S.S. Rajamouli Revives Baahubali with The Epic for Theaters
Filmmaker S.S. Rajamouli has announced an exciting re-release of his renowned Baahubali saga, now titled Baahubali: The Epic. This new version, set to hit theaters on October 31, 2023, condenses the original two-part narrative into a single four-hour film. The re-edit aims not only to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Baahubali: The Beginning but also to introduce the epic story to new audiences who may have missed the films during their initial theatrical runs.
The Baahubali series, which has enjoyed immense popularity and critical acclaim, follows the saga of a warrior heir navigating a grand battle against evil forces. Rajamouli has made the challenging decision to trim the original content, focusing on key narrative moments to create a more action-driven drama. As he explained to Polygon, “I wasn’t OK with trimming anything, but I have to tell a story.” This careful curation has led to the removal of several romantic scenes and musical numbers that did not directly advance the plot.
Enhancements and Future Plans
Despite the edits, Rajamouli has taken the opportunity to enhance the film’s pacing and update some visual effects, ensuring that the changes remain subtle for dedicated fans familiar with the originals. He emphasized that this version is not merely a reissue but a refined experience meant to attract both long-time fans and newcomers to the Baahubali universe.
Rajamouli considers the Baahubali narrative to be more than just two films. He stated, “We just didn’t create Baahubali, the film. We created a world of Baahubali.” His vision for the franchise extends beyond this re-release; he is currently developing a new project, Baahubali: The Eternal War, a 3D CG animated sequel. A teaser for this upcoming feature will be shown during screenings of The Epic.
When asked about the criticisms that have accompanied his films, Rajamouli expressed indifference towards interpretations of political or cultural implications. He made a distinction between audience reactions and analytical critiques, noting, “There are two kinds of criticism… one where people go to the movie and they just don’t like the movie… and another where they try to find some intentions behind the filmmaker.” His focus remains on storytelling rather than engaging with critiques that delve into ideological interpretations.
Current Projects and Future Aspirations
In addition to his work on the Baahubali franchise, Rajamouli is also collaborating with actress Priyanka Chopra and Telugu star Mahesh Babu on a film tentatively titled GEN 63. He has indicated a preference for dedicating his attention to one project at a time, despite the interest from Hollywood studios following the global success of RRR.
Rajamouli’s commitment to exploring the rich mythology of Baahubali continues, as he aims to expand on the world he has created. He reiterated his desire to progress with both Baahubali and his previous hits, stating, “I really want to take them forward.”
With Baahubali: The Epic poised for theatrical release, audiences can look forward to an exhilarating cinematic experience that encapsulates the essence of Rajamouli’s grand vision.
