BIIF Volleyball Teams Exit State Tournaments After Tough Matches

The Big Island Interscholastic Federation (BIIF) faced a disappointing conclusion in the Hawaii High School Athletic Association (HHSAA) girls volleyball state tournaments, with all participating teams eliminated on Thursday night in Oahu. Despite strong performances, each team was unable to advance, leading to their movement into the consolation brackets.

In the Division I tournament, third-seeded Kamehameha-Hawaii encountered a tough challenge against Kamehameha-Kapalama, resulting in a decisive loss. The match held at McKinley High School ended with scores of 25-17, 25-17, and 27-25, marking the first defeat of the season for Kamehameha-Hawaii, which concluded its regular season with an impressive 18-1 record. The standout player for Kamehameha-Kapalama was Kalaweloilehua Chock, who achieved a match-high total of 16 kills and eight digs.

Teammates Sauimoana Purcell contributed 14 kills, while Alayah Wilson provided 21 assists. Kamehameha-Hawaii’s efforts were led by Shay Beals, Kdynse Apaka, and Ahinahiilaiku Enos, who combined for a total of 22 kills. Kealohi Dudoit recorded 18 assists and a game-high 21 digs. Following the match, Kamehameha-Hawaii moved into the fifth-place bracket and prepared to face Campbell in the semifinals.

Kamehameha-Kapalama, now with a record of 12-6, advanced to face the second-seeded Kahuku in the Division I semifinals later that night at Moanalua High School.

In the Division II tournament, Parker School experienced its first loss of the season, falling to Maryknoll in four sets with scores of 25-20, 25-13, 17-25, and 25-12. The Bulls’ record now stands at 16-1. The winning Spartans were led by Puaena Herrington and Parker Chuckovich, who combined for 25 kills. Mehani Dahlin and Sadee Dahl also played critical roles, providing 38 digs collectively, with Dahlin additionally contributing a match-high 40 assists.

Parker School fought valiantly, with Sophia Scholz achieving a match-high 15 kills, but ultimately could not match Maryknoll’s depth. Teammates Rachel Shotwell and Maihana Jara-Hess combined for 38 digs, while Basil Au registered 29 assists. As Parker moved into the fifth-place semifinals to face Hawaii Baptist, Maryknoll advanced to the semifinals against third-seeded Seabury Hall.

As for Ka‘u, the team faced the top-seeded University Lab School, suffering a defeat with scores of 25-11, 25-15, and 25-8 in the Division II quarterfinals. This loss brought Ka‘u’s record to 10-9. The Junior Bows improved to 12-5, powered by a combined 29 kills from Emma Amaral-Boyd, Kaya Kurita-Kramer, Mayah Nakasato, Mari Ah Yat, and Kaniokekai Lau. Jream Santos assisted with 13 assists, while Nakasato and Ah Yat recorded 14 digs together.

Ka‘u’s performance was spearheaded by Shaylie Martinez, McKenzie Decoito, and Harlam Espejo-Reyes, who totaled 12 kills. Kiara Ortega-Oliveira also contributed nine assists. The Junior Bows progressed to face Kapaa in the Division II semifinals, while Ka‘u prepared to compete against No. 5 Roosevelt in the fifth-place bracket.

In consolation play, Hawaii Preparatory Academy (HPA) swept Molokai with scores of 25-9 and 25-23. The 14-6 Ka Makani was led by Kaiulani Honda, who achieved 11 kills. HPA is set to compete against Leilehua in the 10th-place championship later today at Kaimuki.

As the tournaments progress, the BIIF teams have shown resilience, but their journey in the state tournaments has concluded for this year.
