Shaquille O’Neal Offers Wise Advice to Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama
Former NBA star Shaquille O’Neal has shared valuable insights with Victor Wembanyama, the promising rookie for the San Antonio Spurs, as the young player embarks on his second professional season. Wembanyama has begun the 2025-26 season with an impressive record, leading the Spurs to a historic start of 5-0, a first in the franchise’s history.
Wembanyama’s Historic Start
At just 7’4”, Wembanyama has showcased extraordinary skills that combine the agility of a guard with the stature of a center. He made headlines by becoming the first player in NBA history to achieve 150 points and 20 blocks in the first five games of a season. His performance has drawn comparisons to established stars, and O’Neal believes that Wembanyama is redefining expectations for big men in the league.
“They’re playing great,” O’Neal remarked on The Rich Eisen Show. “Joker has already redefined what a big man can do, but Wemby is taking it to a different level, dribbling between his legs and stepping back, looking like Kevin Durant. He’s playing some excellent basketball right now, and I’m happy for him.”
Advice for Longevity in the League
Despite Wembanyama’s electrifying start, O’Neal emphasized the importance of managing his energy throughout the season. Having experienced multiple injuries during his own career, O’Neal is keenly aware of the challenges that come with maintaining peak performance. He referenced former Lakers coach Phil Jackson, who managed his workload effectively during their championship runs.
O’Neal recalled Jackson’s method: “I would tell him to pace himself. Phil would come in at times and say, ‘Hey, sit these two games out. I need you to rest. No parties, no rap videos, no commercials, just rest.’” This approach allowed O’Neal to be at his best when it mattered most.
He cautioned Wembanyama to recognize the value of rest, especially given the physical demands of the NBA. “If Wembanyama gets a freak injury while dominating teams, he shouldn’t hesitate to take a week off, even if it results in a couple of losses for the Spurs,” O’Neal advised. He stressed that playing through minor injuries could lead to more significant problems later in the season, particularly as the playoffs approach.
As the season unfolds, Wembanyama’s ability to balance ambition with caution will be crucial. O’Neal’s advice serves as a reminder that maintaining health is as important as achieving immediate success on the court. Whether Wembanyama heeds this guidance while enjoying his current momentum remains to be seen, but the basketball world will be watching closely.
