Former MLB player and cancer survivor Trey Mancini is making another attempt to return to the majors. The Los Angeles Angels announced on Wednesday that Mancini has signed a minor league contract, which includes an invitation to their spring training camp in Tempe, Arizona. This move places him among the 27 non-roster invitees for the upcoming season.

At 33 years old, Mancini has a notable career spanning seven seasons, during which he has posted a batting average of .263, along with 129 home runs and 400 runs batted in (RBI). However, he has not participated in a major league game since 2023. His journey began with the Baltimore Orioles, where he played parts of six seasons and achieved a career-high of 29 home runs in 2019.

Mancini’s career faced a significant challenge when he missed the entire 2020 season due to surgery for a malignant tumor in his colon. He made a successful return to the field in 2021, demonstrating resilience and determination. His efforts were rewarded when he joined the Houston Astros and won a World Series ring in 2022 after being traded from Baltimore.

In 2023, he played for the Chicago Cubs before shifting to the minor leagues, where he joined the systems of the Cincinnati Reds, Miami Marlins, and Arizona Diamondbacks. During his time with the Diamondbacks, Mancini opted out of a minor league deal last July after achieving an impressive batting average of .308 with 16 home runs while playing for Triple-A Reno.

Mancini’s signing with the Angels is a significant step in his ongoing pursuit of a major league comeback. With the invitation to spring training, he will have the opportunity to showcase his skills and potentially earn a spot on the Angels’ roster for the upcoming season. As Mancini prepares for this new chapter, fans and teammates alike are hopeful for his success on the field.
