Bay Area Mother Killed in Head-On Crash, Community Mourns Loss

URGENT UPDATE: A tragic head-on collision in San Jose has claimed the life of 74-year-old Ellen Orcutt, a beloved mother and social worker. This devastating incident occurred on October 25, 2023, just down the street from her home on Foxworthy Avenue.

Family and friends are reeling from the loss of Orcutt, who was remembered as a “kind, generous” person by her daughter, Joelle Orlando. “I just lost my best friend and my guiding light in this world,” Orlando expressed, heartbroken by the sudden tragedy.

The accident involved an SUV that veered into oncoming traffic while attempting to pass another vehicle. The collision resulted in both cars flipping over, and the driver of the SUV also died from injuries sustained in the crash. Authorities are investigating whether the driver was under the influence of alcohol at the time.

Orcutt dedicated over 25 years to her role at Pacific Clinics, a nonprofit organization focused on behavioral and mental health services. Her family friend, Greg Yoder, praised her resilience, stating, “She dealt with families facing incredibly difficult situations, and she was prepared for it because she had been through some of it herself.”

Loved ones fondly referred to Orcutt as the “resource queen,” known for distributing hygiene kits and clothes, and even bringing bubbles to ease tense moments. Andrew Ford, a coworker, highlighted her impact: “Ellen was always there to remind you that life may be chaotic, but you’re okay, and we’re all going to be okay.”

Orlando has vowed to carry on her mother’s legacy of helping others, urging everyone to “cherish every moment you have because you never know when it’s going to be taken.”

In a poignant farewell, coworkers shared a recent email from Orcutt, reflecting on her years of service. She wrote, “May you all be thankful and with hope for yourselves and those families that come into your life… Keep hope alive. Take good care. Ellen.”
