Costco’s Microfiber Towels Spark Debate: Safe for Your Car’s Paint?
UPDATE: The debate surrounding the safety of using Costco’s Kirkland Signature microfiber towels on car paint has escalated following new tests and expert opinions. Car detailing enthusiasts are questioning whether these low-cost towels, priced at just a few cents each, could be damaging your vehicle’s finish.
Just announced: Detailers and car care experts are divided on the effectiveness of these towels for car surfaces. While Costco’s towels boast an 80/20 blend of polyester and polyamide, which is ideal for general cleaning, many argue that for paint care, a 70/30 blend is the gold standard.
Jon Delieu of Forensic Detailing recently conducted a head-to-head comparison of the Kirkland towels against high-end microfiber options. His testing revealed that the Kirkland towel left micro-scratches on delicate surfaces, while the premium towel produced a flawless finish.
This finding raises urgent concerns for car enthusiasts and everyday drivers alike. The Kirkland towels are known for their affordability, but the potential for damage to your vehicle’s paint cannot be overlooked.
The Kirkland towels are estimated to have a density of around 350 GSM, considered a solid weight for cleaning. However, past complaints about the towels include scratchy stitched edges and a stiff tag that caused issues during use. Fortunately, Costco has improved the design by eliminating the tag, but the edges remain contentious among users.
Detailing forums are buzzing with polarized opinions. Some users swear by the Kirkland towels for various tasks, while purists recommend reserving them for wheels and glass only, citing that they can cause micro-marring on softer paint finishes.
So, can you confidently use these towels on your car’s paint? While they might serve well for casual detailing, experts advise strict adherence to techniques: use ample lubrication from quality car soap, apply light pressure, and maintain the towels meticulously.
For those who desire a pristine, mirror-like finish, it may be wise to invest in premium microfiber options. For weekend warriors tackling routine cleaning, however, the Kirkland towels remain a viable choice, provided you exercise caution.
As this debate unfolds, car owners are urged to weigh the pros and cons carefully. Share your experiences and thoughts on using Costco’s microfiber towels for car detailing. What’s your take on this trending topic?
