Barbara from Abbott Elementary Tackles Halloween Vandalism Plans
The upcoming episode of the popular sitcom Abbott Elementary features a comedic yet serious storyline as Barbara Howard, portrayed by Sheryl Lee Ralph, confronts students’ plans for Halloween that veer into vandalism. Set to air on October 29, 2023, the episode highlights Barbara’s determination to ensure that the students enjoy the festivities without breaking any laws.
In an exclusive preview shared by Us Weekly, Barbara learns that her students consider themselves “too old” for traditional trick-or-treating. Instead, they share plans that include toilet papering houses, egging apartments, and engaging in the classic prank of ding-dong ditch. Alarmed by these ideas, Barbara responds, “No! Is there any way for us to be outside with it without vandalism?” One student even suggests the more alarming notion of starting a small fire.
Faced with the challenge of redirecting the students’ enthusiasm, Barbara quickly proposes an alternative. “If you like fire, being outside, and holding onto rolls of toilet paper, why don’t we go on a camping trip?” she suggests, aiming to channel their energy into a more positive activity. The idea sparks excitement among the group, although a few students still express interest in “throwing eggs at something,” which Barbara promises to “think about” as she plans the outdoor adventure.
The episode will follow Barbara’s camping plans, which intriguingly involve the participation of other teachers from the school. Since its debut in 2021, Abbott Elementary has gained critical acclaim, securing numerous awards, including Golden Globe and Emmy accolades, for its portrayal of teachers in a Philadelphia public school.
Before the premiere of season five last month, Sheryl Lee Ralph discussed her character’s journey, hinting at the unknowns of Barbara’s storyline. “I can tell you absolutely nothing because I know absolutely nothing [about Barbara’s arc]. Be very afraid,” she teased. Reflecting on her long career in Hollywood, Ralph emphasized her legacy, stating, “My children are my greatest legacy. I met Cicely Tyson on a plane once. She said, ‘Sheryl, you are going to do wonderful things, but your children will be some of the greatest things you ever do.’”
Ralph, who has two children, son Etienne, 33, and daughter Ivy Coco, 30, with ex-husband Eric Maurice, views her role as a parent as deeply significant. “When I’m no longer here, I will leave two wonderful people to speak my name,” she added. The actress encourages others to prioritize their health and well-being as they age, sharing advice to “relax, listen to your doctors, drink that water, keep it moving, and take a moment to enjoy nature.”
As Abbott Elementary continues its run, viewers can catch new episodes on ABC every Wednesday at 20:30 ET, with episodes available for streaming on Hulu the following day.
