Dodgers Embrace New Strategy as Scherzer Returns for Game 3
UPDATE: The Los Angeles Dodgers are set to face the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 3 of the World Series on October 15, 2025, and this matchup has significant implications as former Dodger Max Scherzer takes the mound for Toronto. This game not only highlights Scherzer’s return but marks a stark contrast to the Dodgers’ prior postseason strategies, which have evolved dramatically since their last World Series appearance.
The Dodgers, boasting a 10-2 postseason record, are riding high on a new pitching approach that has proven effective. Unlike previous years where over-analytics clouded decision-making, this season, they are committed to letting their top starters like Blake Snell, Tyler Glasnow, and Shohei Ohtani pitch their way through games without unnecessary manipulation.
Pitching coach Mark Prior stated, “Clearly, Blake Snell, Yama, Glasnow, Shohei, all really good pitchers… any team would probably roll them out in a playoff game.” This straightforward strategy has led to a clean, effective postseason for the Dodgers, contrasting sharply with their tactical missteps in 2021.
During the 2021 postseason, the Dodgers faced elimination in an all-or-nothing finale against the San Francisco Giants due to a confusing pitching arrangement that involved using their ace, Scherzer, in a closing role after a reliever opened the game. Scherzer’s arm was locked up, leading to his inability to pitch in the next elimination game, which the Dodgers subsequently lost.
“Guys, when they lie, they go out there and they take on too much, then they blow out,” Scherzer said during the 2021 postseason, emphasizing the risks of mismanagement.
Fast forward to 2025, the Dodgers are capitalizing on their formidable rotation, which includes Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who recently delivered his second consecutive complete game. This newfound stability indicates a less stressful atmosphere within the team, according to Prior.
As the Dodgers prepare for the pivotal Game 3, the question looms: Can Glasnow deliver the expected six or seven innings? If successful, the Dodgers will be that much closer to clinching the championship.
With Scherzer’s focus solely on winning with the Blue Jays, the stakes have never been higher for both teams. The Dodgers are determined to avoid the pitfalls of past postseason strategies, ensuring their pitching staff is utilized effectively and efficiently.
As Game 3 approaches, fans and analysts alike are eager to see if the Dodgers can maintain their momentum and secure a critical victory on their home turf at Dodger Stadium.
