Draymond Green Defends NBA, Commissioner Silver During Gambling Probe

Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green publicly defended the NBA and its commissioner, Adam Silver, during an ongoing investigation into gambling practices within the league. In a recent episode of his podcast, “The Draymond Green Show,” Green addressed concerns surrounding the NBA’s partnerships with major sportsbooks, asserting that the league maintains a strong commitment to addressing gambling issues.

Green’s comments come in the wake of serious legal issues involving several prominent figures in basketball. Last week, Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups, and former Cleveland Cavaliers player Damon Jones were arrested as part of two separate FBI investigations linked to illegal sports betting and rigged poker games associated with organized crime.

In his podcast, Green dismissed the notion that the NBA is unconcerned about gambling simply because of its partnerships with sportsbooks such as FanDuel, DraftKings, and others. He emphasized, “There’s bad apples everywhere,” indicating that issues of integrity can arise in any sport or organization.

Green challenged critics who claim that Silver does not prioritize the integrity of the game, saying, “Stop the bulls—. Cut it out. We watch these gambling videos every year. They’re on top of this stuff.” The NBA has implemented stringent measures, requiring all players and personnel to undergo gambling education training at the start of each season. This training includes detailed information on league policies and the consequences of violations.

In May, Green faced his own disciplinary action when the NBA fined him $50,000 for questioning the integrity of game officials during the Western Conference semifinals. He referenced a specific betting line, stating, “5.5. I know what y’all doing,” which led to the fine.

Reflecting on the challenges and pressures of professional basketball, Green expressed his dedication to the sport. “We put our heart and souls into this to try to be the last ones standing. To try to build great careers. To try to build great legacies,” he stated on his podcast. He also noted the distinction between league partnerships and personal benefits, saying, “I don’t get free Bud Light and Budweiser to my house because the NBA is with Bud Light. I don’t get a free FanDuel pass or DraftKings or Fanatics Sportsbook because the NBA is partnered. Come on now. Give it a break.”

Green concluded by praising the current state of the NBA, asserting, “The league Adam has built has been incredible. It’s doing as great as it’s ever done. It’s larger than it’s ever been.” His remarks underscore the ongoing complexities of gambling in sports and highlight the league’s effort to maintain integrity in the face of emerging challenges.
