Jalen Williams Sparks Thunder’s 11th Straight Win Over Suns
UPDATE: In a thrilling return, Jalen Williams made his long-awaited season debut, scoring 11 points and dishing out 8 assists to propel the Oklahoma City Thunder to a 123-119 victory over the Phoenix Suns on November 17, 2023. This win marks the Thunder’s 11th consecutive victory and secures their spot in the knockout round of the NBA Cup.
The game took place at the Paycom Center in Oklahoma City, where the Thunder showcased their dominance despite Williams missing the first 19 games of the season due to wrist surgery. Williams, who played 29 minutes, helped his team reach an impressive 19-1 record, making them only the fifth team in NBA history to achieve such a start.
Williams, who underwent surgery in July for a torn ligament in his right wrist, remarked on his return, saying, “The goal for tonight was to get in a rhythm, but it’s an adjustment.” His presence on the court is expected to elevate the Thunder’s performance as they continue their quest for the championship.
Despite his absence, the Thunder have been formidable, with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander leading the charge. Gilgeous-Alexander scored a game-high 37 points, including a crucial 15 points in the final seven minutes. His performance ties him with Wilt Chamberlain for the second-longest streak in NBA history, scoring at least 20 points in 92 consecutive games.
Williams acknowledged the challenges ahead, especially on the offensive end, stating, “Defense is easy for me… Offensively, yeah, it’ll take time.” His commitment to contribute defensively is apparent, as he aims to find his rhythm in the upcoming games.
However, a significant impact of his late return is the ineligibility for postseason honors, which eliminates his chance to earn a $287 million super maximum contract kicker in his five-year, $239 million extension.
The Thunder’s performance continues to capture attention as they remain a dominant force in the NBA. As they prepare for their next matchup, all eyes will be on Williams and how he adapts to the fast-paced game after his recovery.
Stay tuned for more updates as the Thunder aim to extend their winning streak and solidify their status in the league.
