Kutztown Students Launch ‘Footloose’ Musical This Weekend!
UPDATE: The Kutztown Area School District is set to electrify audiences with its production of “Footloose the Musical”, showcasing hit songs like “Holding Out for a Hero” and “Let’s Hear It for the Boy.” This high-energy show, inspired by the beloved 1984 film, will take the stage at the Kutztown High School auditorium on November 21 and 22.
In this vibrant tale, city teen Ren McCormack moves from Chicago to the small town of Bomont, where he discovers dancing has been banned by the local preacher. Determined to bring joy back to the community, Ren rallies his classmates to challenge the oppressive rules. This production promises to be a celebration of freedom, friendship, and self-discovery.
Director LeAnne Zettlemoyer expressed her excitement, stating,
“The story of Footloose is so much more than some teenagers wanting to dance. It’s about relationships, letting go of the past, and the healing and forgiveness that can happen when we take the time to listen to one another.”
The cast and crew comprise over 70 students from grades 6-12, all collaborating to bring this iconic musical to life. Students are involved in every aspect, from performing to stage management and sound design. Zettlemoyer emphasized the invaluable experience gained through participation, encouraging skills in teamwork and leadership that will benefit students in their future careers.
This production is made possible through a partnership among students, directors, and parent volunteers, all contributing to various roles. “It truly takes a village!” Zettlemoyer noted, highlighting the seamless experience intended for the audience.
The show features a dynamic ensemble, with standout performances from lead cast members: Elliot Johnson as Ren, Olivia Vos as Ariel Moore, and Anna Stump as Rusty. Johnson remarked, “Musical theatre allows people to not only express themselves but also to come together through common interests.”
A special free dinner for senior citizens will kick off the festivities on November 20 at 4:30 PM, followed by a preview show at 6 PM. Reservations are required for this event, limited to the first 150 people.
Regular performances are scheduled for November 21 at 7 PM and November 22 at 2 PM and 7 PM. Tickets are priced at $15 for adults and $12 for students and seniors and can be purchased online or at the auditorium an hour before each show.
With high anticipation building, the Kutztown community is invited to experience the joy and energy of “Footloose.” Follow the production on social media at kutztowntheater on Facebook and kutztown.musical on Instagram for updates and behind-the-scenes content.
