UPDATE: Just announced: Law enforcement officials in Oklahoma City are taking urgent steps to ensure that 417 children receive toys this holiday season. In a heartwarming initiative, officers from the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office teamed up with Sunbeam Family Services to kick off their annual shopping event, aiming to bring joy to families in need.

As the holiday season approaches, with less than two months until Christmas, SGT. Tara Hardin emphasized the critical impact of this initiative. “For some of those families, this may be the only toys that they get,” she stated. The shopping spree, which took place on Wednesday, is part of a larger effort that has been ongoing for 25 years.

Local law enforcement officers scoured the aisles, carefully selecting toys for children of various ages. This event culminates in a festive gathering each December where presents are distributed, often featuring Santa and even the Grinch. “We are shopping for 417 kids today that will culminate in a huge event in December,” SGT. Hardin noted.

The initiative extends beyond just holiday gifts. Brandi Rettman, Careteam Coordinator at Sunbeam Family Services, highlighted the broader support offered to families. “We have a lot of wraparound services that this has expanded into, including mental health support for our grandparents and grandchildren if needed,” she explained. This comprehensive approach also includes events throughout the year, such as back-to-school supplies distributions and summer activities.

SGT. Hardin shared the emotional satisfaction derived from participating in this event. “We don’t want families to have to choose between necessities and fun when you’re a child. Christmas should be fun. So there is a place where that hole can be filled,” she said, underscoring the importance of community support.

As the holiday spirit grows, this initiative not only addresses immediate needs but also fosters long-term community connections. If you are a grandparent raising a grandchild and wish to get involved with Sunbeam Family Services, click here for more information.

This urgent call to action highlights the critical role that community organizations and local law enforcement play in supporting families during the festive season. As preparations continue, the impact of this generosity will resonate throughout the community—making this Christmas a memorable one for many children.
