Oklahoma Tax Commission Issues Urgent Scam Alert for Taxpayers
UPDATE: The Oklahoma Tax Commission (OTC) has just issued an urgent warning to taxpayers about a widespread text message scam targeting individuals with fraudulent claims about tax refunds. The OTC emphasizes that these messages are deceptive and not affiliated with their agency.
According to OTC officials, the scam texts claim that a “tax refund request has been processed and approved,” instructing recipients to click a link or respond with personal payment information. This is a clear attempt to steal sensitive data.
“The OTC will never send unsolicited text messages asking taxpayers to provide personal data, banking details, or payment information,” stated Doug Linehan, Executive Director of the OTC. “Anyone who receives such a message should not click on any links or respond.”
Taxpayers are advised to take immediate action if they receive these suspicious messages. The OTC recommends:
- Delete the message immediately.
- If any personal information has been provided, contact your financial institution right away.
- Report the incident to the Oklahoma Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Unit at consumerprotection.ok.gov.
This alert comes as part of a broader effort to protect taxpayers from escalating fraud schemes. The OTC urges citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
For further inquiries, taxpayers can reach out via email at [email protected].
Stay informed and share this warning with friends and family to help combat these fraudulent efforts. Your awareness could prevent someone from becoming a victim.
As scams evolve, so should your knowledge. Stay alert and protect your financial information.
