Hopedale Officials Support Officer’s Decision on Raccoon Euthanization

Hopedale town officials are defending a police officer’s decision to euthanize an aggressive raccoon on Christmas Day following reports of the animal’s unusual behavior and a suspected attack on a local resident. The raccoon exhibited signs that suggested a potential rabies infection, prompting concern for public health.

In a joint statement from Hopedale Police Chief Mark Giovanella and Town Administrator Mitch Ruscitti, the officials described the raccoon’s actions as “disoriented, wobbling, and acting erratically.” Given the circumstances, the officers encountered the raccoon in a residential area and opted against using firearms due to the “close proximity to occupied homes.” Instead, they chose what the officials referred to as “the safest available method under the circumstances to euthanize the animal.”

While the specific euthanasia method was not disclosed by the officials, a neighbor’s account described a distressing scene in which an officer allegedly ran over the raccoon multiple times. This account has raised concerns and drawn backlash from some residents who witnessed the incident.

In light of the community’s strong reactions, officials reiterated the necessity and legality of the officer’s actions. “The town unequivocally supports the officer and the police department in carrying out their duties to protect the community and prevent serious harm,” the statement noted, as reported by NewsCenter 5. The incident has also led to attempts by some community members to publicly identify and target the officer involved, despite calls for restraint from town officials.
