Pittsfield Celebrates 50 Years as a City This Sunday
URGENT UPDATE: This Sunday, February 11, 1940, marks the 50th anniversary of Pittsfield’s transition from a town to a city, a significant milestone in its history. On this day in 1890, voters made a momentous decision, approving the city charter with a narrow margin of 932 to 786.
The vote came after an 18-year debate over the change. Despite strong opposition rooted in New England tradition, the community embraced a new governmental structure, paving the way for Pittsfield’s evolution over the past five decades. Voter turnout was surprisingly low, indicating mixed feelings among residents about the shift.
The election was conducted at the Town Hall, with polls open from 8 AM to 5 PM. Moderated by Selectman George Y. Learned, the meeting featured key figures such as Eugene H. Robbins and William F. Harrington, who played essential roles in presenting the charter. Election checkers included Gilbert West and future Mayor Walter F. Hawkins, highlighting the community’s investment in this pivotal moment.
The official warrant read: “Shall an act passed by the General Court in the year 1889 entitled, ‘An act to incorporate the City of Pittsfield,’ be accepted?” With this question, the future of Pittsfield was at stake, culminating in a decision that would shape its governance for generations.
As residents prepare to commemorate this historic day, discussions about the city’s growth and development over the last fifty years are expected to spark community pride and reflection. The anniversary serves as a reminder of the challenges overcome to achieve city status, as well as the ongoing evolution of Pittsfield’s identity.
Stay tuned for more updates and celebrations planned across the city this weekend. This milestone is not just a reflection of the past but a look forward to the future of Pittsfield as it continues to thrive.
