Sterling Heights Launches Urgent Food Drive Amid SNAP Cuts
UPDATE: The residents and businesses of Sterling Heights have launched the 47th Annual Ken Stempowski Memorial Food Drive, responding urgently to the pressing needs caused by the ongoing federal shutdown and cuts to SNAP benefits. This critical initiative, led by the City’s Department of Public Works, aims to combat rising food insecurity in the community.
With the backdrop of increased hardship for many families, the food drive is more vital than ever. Mike Moore, Director of Public Works, emphasized the importance of community support, stating, “Ken’s legacy reminds us that one person’s compassion can create lasting change.” The drive, established nearly fifty years ago by Ken Stempowski, continues to embody the spirit of neighborly assistance, now enhanced by a partnership with the Chaldean Community Foundation.
Residents can contribute nonperishable food items at multiple locations throughout the city, including City Hall, the Community Center, and the Sterling Heights Public Library. Donations will be accepted until December 17. Additionally, the food drive will feature a presence during the city’s signature event, Sterling Christmas, in early December.
Mayor Michael C. Taylor expressed his commitment to inclusivity, noting that this partnership is essential for reaching residents impacted by the current challenges. “Our community’s spirit shines through as we work together to support those in need,” he remarked.
In addition to food donations, monetary contributions are encouraged. All funds raised will support the Community Food Bank of Macomb County, which serves a network of local food pantries and meal services. This collaboration aims to maximize the impact of the food drive during a time of increased demand.
As the community rallies together, the food drive not only honors the memory of a dedicated public servant but also serves as a lifeline for those facing economic difficulties. Residents are urged to act swiftly and generously to help ensure that no one in Sterling Heights goes hungry this season.
This is a developing story, and updates will follow as the food drive progresses. For more information on how to contribute, visit the official City of Sterling Heights website.
