Tenants Accuse SF Management of Stealing Over $2,000 in Gifts
URGENT UPDATE: Tenants at Thomas Paine Square in the Fillmore District of San Francisco are reeling after accusations emerged that members of the property management staff broke into their homes and stole over $2,000 in Christmas gifts. The shocking incident, which reportedly took place on December 11, 2025, has sparked outrage just days before the holiday season.
Eyewitness accounts reveal that a video captured staff members attempting to disable security cameras while removing presents and other personal items. “They took advent calendars, Build-A-Bear kits, and gifts meant for family and friends,” said Aveda Hussain, who is speaking on behalf of a tenant impacted by the alleged theft.
Residents are now questioning the integrity of the management company, Domus Management, which oversees the 98 subsidized housing units. “It’s a violation of privacy,” Hussain added. “It left Mr. Lee, a physically handicapped tenant, feeling fearful.”
In a statement, the San Francisco Police Department confirmed they are investigating the incident, stating, “At this time, no arrest has been made for this open and active investigation.”
The president of Domus Management, Cathy M. Metcalf, acknowledged the involvement of her employees and stated they have been terminated and had their key access revoked. However, she controversially claimed that the stolen items were not Christmas gifts, arguing that the unit was rented by a family member who is no longer on the lease and labeling residents as “squatters.”
Residents, including tenant association treasurer Barbara Carthen, are demanding more accountability from management. “They need to conduct proper background checks and drug tests for anyone they hire,” Carthen emphasized, highlighting the need for increased security measures in the wake of this incident.
Tenant organizer Patrick Cochran reflected on the emotional toll of the situation, saying, “It’s disheartening to see the spirit of Christmas robbed—it feels like the Grinch stole our joy.”
As the investigation continues, community members are left wondering what actions will be taken next. Tenants are advocating for a complete overhaul of security protocols to ensure this type of breach never occurs again.
Anyone with information regarding this case is urged to contact the SFPD at 415-575-4444 or text a tip to TIP411 with the message starting with SFPD.
This developing story raises critical questions about tenant safety and management accountability in subsidized housing, and it underscores the urgent need for reforms to protect vulnerable residents. Stay tuned for more updates on this unfolding situation.
