UPDATE: Major changes are on the horizon for Saratoga as traffic from a new Costco slated for Prospect and Lawrence in San Jose threatens to overwhelm local streets. With an anticipated 10-fold increase in traffic, residents are urged to take immediate action to enhance safety.

As October begins, the community is reminded that walking safety is more crucial than ever. Residents are advised to carry flashlights and wear reflective gear during early mornings and after dusk to ensure visibility for drivers. With the new Costco expected to draw substantial traffic, officials emphasize the need for urgent safety measures.

Saratoga’s wide residential roads, lacking sidewalks, often lead to higher speeds as drivers ignore posted limits. Mayor Belal Aftab highlights the need for visual road cues such as center lines and crosswalks to reduce speeds and protect pedestrians.

The situation is exacerbated by the rise of quiet electric vehicles, which pose a risk to pedestrians who may not hear them approaching, especially at night. The impending Costco will further complicate matters, as drivers from surrounding areas seek the quickest routes to and from Highway 85.

“We have reached out to Costco for resources but have received no response,” expressed Councilmember Rosemary Kamei, acknowledging community concerns over the impending traffic surge.

Local hotspots are already notorious for congestion, including morning traffic near schools and frequent accidents at critical intersections like Miller Avenue and Fruitvale Avenue. Residents have reported near misses at Herriman Avenue and Saratoga Avenue, signaling that immediate intervention is necessary.

This year, Saratoga has made progress by adding buffered bike lanes, refreshing crosswalks, and lowering speed limits in school zones. However, more needs to be done.

Residents are encouraged to model safe driving behaviors, such as full stops at stop signs and slower turns at intersections. Additionally, the city invites input from the community on potential safety improvements. Simple suggestions like edge-lining curves or relocating crosswalks can make a significant difference.

As the season shifts, Saratoga is called to action to ensure a safer environment for all. A calmer Saratoga is essential for enhancing community well-being. Residents are urged to stay vigilant, prioritize safety, and report issues directly to city officials, as every voice can contribute to a safer Saratoga.

The urgency of these developments cannot be overstated. With the Costco opening anticipated to dramatically increase traffic, now is the time for residents to take proactive measures for their safety and community’s future.
