Urgent Search for Cowboys’ Marshawn Kneeland Ends in Tragedy
UPDATE: A desperate search for Dallas Cowboys player Marshawn Kneeland ended tragically as he was found dead from an apparent suicide early on November 6, 2023. This follows a harrowing vehicle pursuit that reached speeds of up to 160 mph (258 kph) just hours earlier.
The chaotic events unfolded after Kneeland, 24, was pursued by Texas state troopers on the Dallas North Tollway around 10:33 PM on November 5. Initially believed to be driving a stolen car, the situation escalated dramatically when the pursuit ended in a crash with a Ford F-350 truck in Frisco, a suburb of Dallas. Witnesses reported seeing Kneeland’s Dodge Charger speeding and crashing before he fled the scene on foot.
Authorities launched an intense manhunt utilizing K-9 units and a drone, with officers firing pepper balls into drainage tunnels in a frantic attempt to locate him. A trooper reported that Kneeland’s Charger was clocked at speeds higher than 145 mph (233 kph) during the chase.
The search intensified as family members expressed grave concerns for Kneeland’s safety, revealing he had sent goodbye messages prior to the pursuit. According to police reports, around 1 AM on November 6, officers determined that the suspect was Kneeland, prompting them to reach out to his girlfriend, Catalina Mancera, who had arrived at the scene. Mancera initially withheld information but later assisted authorities in the search.
In a heartbreaking turn, Kneeland’s body was discovered inside a portable toilet shortly after the search concluded. Mancera shared her grief on social media, stating, “My sweet boy is really gone… I will see you again.”
The Dallas Cowboys organization has since announced a memorial fund to support Mancera, who is pregnant with the couple’s child, emphasizing the profound impact of this tragedy on the community.
This incident raises urgent discussions about mental health, especially among athletes facing immense pressures. The national suicide and crisis lifeline is available by calling or texting 988, for anyone in need of support.
