Urgent Winter Storm Hits New York; Albany Team Aids Emergency Prep
UPDATE: A powerful winter storm has struck upstate New York, impacting communities and prompting urgent preparations from local emergency managers. The University at Albany is actively collaborating with state officials to provide vital weather tracking and risk communication to ensure public safety.
As the storm continues to affect the region, the New York State Weather Risk Communication Center is at the forefront of this effort. Their team, led by director Nick Bassill, creates detailed weather briefings that are crucial for state and local emergency responses. “We distribute extensive weather briefings to the state’s emergency management sector,” Bassill stated, emphasizing the importance of accurate and timely data.
The center’s lead meteorologist, Allison Finch, explained that their efforts include monitoring air quality, drought reports, and hurricane outlooks, in addition to alerts from the National Weather Service. “There’s a lot of information that goes into it,” Finch added, underscoring the team’s commitment to providing tailored weather updates every day of the week.
The data generated by the center translates into actionable insights for emergency managers. “Those are the different colors associated with every National Weather Service product out there,” Bassill said. “This enables us to understand the who, what, where, and when of various weather conditions affecting the state.”
As communities deal with the aftermath of the current storm, the Albany team is already focused on future weather challenges. “Today, we’re recapping the storm that occurred overnight, highlighting peak ice totals and gusty winds,” Finch reported. Furthermore, the team is preparing for ongoing lake-effect snow expected throughout the week.
The collaborative efforts between the University at Albany and emergency management officials play a crucial role in safeguarding lives and property during severe weather events. “This allows the state or county to respond effectively and make informed decisions that protect lives,” Bassill stated.
Residents are urged to stay updated as the situation develops. The University at Albany team remains dedicated to ensuring that accurate weather information reaches those who need it most, providing a lifeline for communities grappling with the impact of severe winter weather.
