Urgent Winter Weather Advisory: Up to 3 Inches of Snow Expected
UPDATE: A winter weather advisory has just been issued for South Central Pennsylvania, warning residents of potential snow accumulations of up to 3 inches on Tuesday, January 16, 2024. The advisory, confirmed by the National Weather Service, is in effect from 3 a.m. to 1 p.m. and covers Fulton, Franklin, Adams, York, and Lancaster counties.
The forecast indicates mixed precipitation, including snow, sleet, freezing rain, and possibly plain rain. As conditions deteriorate, authorities urge residents to prepare for slick and hazardous roads, particularly on bridges and overpasses. Travelers should expect significant impacts during the Tuesday morning commute.
“Roads will likely become slippery, leading to dangerous driving conditions,”
warns the National Weather Service. Officials advise drivers to slow down and exercise caution while traveling. For the most current road conditions, residents can call 5-1-1 for updates.
This winter weather poses serious safety concerns. Each year, over 6,000 weather-related vehicle fatalities occur, alongside more than 480,000 injuries due to adverse conditions. It is crucial for motorists to prioritize safety by adjusting their driving habits to account for icy conditions, especially when temperatures hover near freezing.
Residents are also reminded to be vigilant of potential hazards such as ice accumulating on power lines and tree branches, which can lead to falling hazards. If you must drive, opt for routes that minimize exposure to trees and power lines, and never attempt to touch downed power lines. Instead, call 911 immediately if you encounter one.
Here are essential winter driving tips from the National Weather Service to ensure safety during this storm:
– Share travel plans: Inform family or friends of your destination, route, and estimated arrival time.
– Prepare your vehicle: Ensure your gas tank is full and equip your car with winter essentials like a windshield scraper, jumper cables, a flashlight, and warm clothing.
– Stay calm if stranded: If you become stranded, remain with your vehicle and signal for help by attaching a cloth to your antenna.
– Be mindful of snow plows: Keep ample distance and only overtake them when the road ahead is clear.
– Check road conditions: Verify current conditions before leaving to make informed travel decisions.
As January 16 approaches, residents are advised to remain alert to changing weather conditions and to take proactive measures to ensure their safety. Stay tuned for further updates as this situation develops, and share this information with friends and family to keep everyone informed during this winter storm.
