The Jewish community in Bondi Beach, Sydney, is grappling with deep sorrow and anger following a tragic attack during a Hanukkah celebration on December 14 that resulted in the deaths of 15 individuals. The incident has sparked outrage directed at government authorities for not acting on warnings about escalating antisemitic threats. As the community reflects on its historical roots in the area, many are coming to terms with a new reality that feels irrevocably altered.

Linda Royal, whose family fled Poland during World War II, expressed the community’s distress. Her parents arrived in Sydney in 1941, seeking refuge after enduring the horrors of Nazi persecution. Royal noted that Bondi has long been a home for Jewish migrants, first welcoming Holocaust survivors and later refugees from the former Soviet Union. “There was a huge sense of community,” she said, highlighting the resilience of the Jewish population. “We’re constantly, unfortunately, on the run from persecution.”

The attack, described as Australia’s worst mass shooting in decades, has left the community feeling shattered. Royal articulated the depth of their loss: “It’ll never be the same again.” The two suspects have been identified as Naveed Akram, 24, and his 50-year-old father, Sajid Akram. The elder Akram was shot dead at the scene, while police have charged his son with 59 offenses, including terrorism and 15 counts of murder. Investigators believe that both men were influenced by the ideology of the Islamic State terrorist group, with two homemade ISIS flags reportedly found in Naveed Akram’s vehicle.

Alex Ryvchin, co-chief executive officer of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, characterized the community’s response as a mixture of profound sadness and intense anger. He emphasized that the Jewish community had repeatedly warned the government about rising antisemitism. “The writing was on the wall,” Ryvchin stated, indicating that a series of violent incidents over the years had escalated to this tragic conclusion.

The authorities’ inaction has drawn scrutiny, especially from community leaders like Ryvchin. He pointed out a troubling pattern of antisemitic incidents, including harassment and vandalism of Jewish properties, culminating in the recent attack. “This was always going to end in murder,” he lamented, calling for more effective measures to combat antisemitic violence.

In the aftermath of the attack, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced plans to address hate speech and gun control. He stated that his government would collaborate with state authorities to introduce new laws. New South Wales, where Bondi is located, is currently discussing stricter gun laws, while state leaders aim to prohibit the display of terrorist symbols and regulate protests.

Despite these proposals, some community members remain skeptical. Antony Loewenstein, a journalist and member of the Jewish Council of Australia, criticized the government’s response as rushed and potentially unconstitutional. He argued that the proposed laws could face legal challenges and expressed concern about their implications for civil liberties. Loewenstein also contested suggestions that pro-Palestinian demonstrations had directly incited violence against Jewish individuals, asserting that a connection between the two is unfounded.

Calls for a Royal Commission into the attack are growing. Ryvchin emphasized the necessity of such an inquiry, stating it would help ensure the safety and security of Jewish individuals going forward. He expressed hope that next year’s Hanukkah celebrations could return to a sense of normalcy, free from fear.

As the Bondi community mourns its loss, Linda Royal encapsulated the collective sentiment: “We now associate this place with yet another place of a Jewish massacre, and that can never be taken away.” The emotional and social impacts of this attack will likely reverberate throughout the community for years to come, marking a new chapter in their history.
