Wyomissing Police Respond to Series of Incidents, Including Crashes
On December 21, 2023, the Wyomissing Police Department managed a multitude of incidents throughout the day, including a serious vehicle crash that resulted in an officer being hospitalized. The department’s incident log details a range of calls, from alleged thefts to multiple traffic violations, highlighting the demanding nature of the officers’ shift.
One of the most significant events occurred at approximately 01:00 a.m. on Chestnut Street near Fifth Avenue in West Reading. A marked police vehicle was struck by another car that reportedly ran a red light. Both vehicles were towed from the site, and the police officer involved was taken to Reading Hospital Medical Center for evaluation. The investigation into the accident was assigned to West Reading Police.
Earlier that morning, Wyomissing officers assisted West Reading police with a weapons-related incident on Third Avenue. A man was alleged to have brandished a knife against security personnel. Specific details regarding charges or injuries have not been disclosed at this time.
Traffic Violations and False Alarms
Following the early morning incidents, the police department reported a high-speed attempted traffic stop on Route 422 near North Wyomissing Boulevard. The vehicle reportedly fled the scene, prompting officers to refrain from pursuing due to safety concerns related to reckless driving.
Throughout the day, Wyomissing officers conducted numerous traffic stops, issuing warnings and citations for various violations, such as expired registration, lack of insurance, and driving under suspension. Additionally, several burglar alarms were investigated across the borough, all of which were found to be false or canceled prior to police arrival.
The department responded to multiple other calls, including reports of suspicious vehicles, 911 hang-up calls, and a hit-and-run incident involving a parked police vehicle in Reading. An alleged theft of services was also reported on Woodland Road, where a man left a restaurant without paying after his payment card was declined.
Domestic Incidents and Juvenile Allegations
As evening approached, Wyomissing police provided assistance to officers from Shillington and West Reading regarding domestic-related incidents. In Shillington, a male was taken into custody following a reported physical domestic dispute. Meanwhile, in West Reading, police responded to a domestic disturbance at an apartment complex, where the male involved left voluntarily for the night.
Another incident involved an alleged theft attempt by a juvenile on Crossing Drive, where a young female was reportedly seen trying to remove signs from a fallen street sign post. The juvenile was released to a parent at the scene.
Authorities underscored that all criminal matters mentioned remain allegations. Any suspect, arrestee, or defendant is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The incident log from December 21 reflects a total of 26 calls for service handled by the Wyomissing Police Department, emphasizing the active and eventful nature of the officers’ day.
